Creative recycling, offbeat artistry and energetic “people power” are to entertain spectators during the Papio Kinetic Sculpture and Art Bike Parade set to celebrate Earth Day in Key West.

Activities including a lighthearted sea battle featuring tall ships, a parade dubbed the world’s longest and a “drag” race for female impersonators await Key West fans April 21-30 during the 41st annual Conch Republic Days celebration.

Kathryn “Kat” Vallilee of Key West was named grand champion angler at the March Merkin Permit Tournament that ended March 16, becoming the first woman to win the Florida Keys event that targets the famously elusive gamefish.

Some 250 drones are to illuminate the sky above Key West’s Truman Waterfront Park Saturday, March 25, in a dazzling “fireworks” display capping the opening event of the Florida Keys’ multimonth bicentennial celebration.

Florida Keys artist Michelle Nicole Lowe, whose family heritage in the island chain spans more than a century, painted the colorful cover image for the 2023 Keys Traveler, the annual visitor magazine produced by the Florida Keys tourism council that is primarily distributed at travel shows.

Among contestants who tested their “seashell musicianship” in Key West Saturday, none succeeded better than Brian Cardis. Cardis, who lives in Macon, Georgia, took top honors in the competitive men’s division of the traditional Conch (pronounced “konk”) Shell Blowing Contest presented by the Old Island Restoration Foundation at Key West’s Oldest House Museum.

“The Florida Keys: 200 Years of Paradise, ” an hourlong television documentary that explores the history of the continental United States’ southernmost island chain, is set to debut on many Public Broadcasting Service channels across the U.S. beginning March 1.
