‘African Queen’ Movie Boat

African Queen Movie Boat

Here’s a FANTASTIC informative blog from years past… ENJOY!

I found the Original Movie Boat from the “African Queen”! This 1952 Oscar Award Winning Movie directed by legendary John Houston stars Humphrey Bogart & Katherine Hepburn. Its tagline was “The greatest adventure a man ever lived…with a woman!” For those who haven’t seen it, here’s its plot: In Africa during WWI, a gin-swilling riverboat captain is persuaded by a strait-laced missionary to use his boat to attack an enemy warship. Though filmed in 5 different countries its largest contributor was the Democratic Republic of the Congo (formerly Zaire). Stop here: Trivia time… Did you know that the DR Congo is the 12th Largest country in the WORLD… I didn’t! Hmmm… I bet some of you are saying ‘I’ve never even heard of the DR Congo’! ? Wow, what a deal, for the small price of FREE you’re learning about the movie and a history lesson in the same Blog!

The boat itself sank several times during filming and had to be resurrected to complete the film. You can see the historic movie icon in Key Largo at Mile Marker 99.9 docked against the pier at the Holiday Inn. To view it is FREE, taking it out on your own cruise for hire is available at the front desk… hopefully it won’t sink on the filming of your home movie! ?
